Local relevance

Why a local plasterer matters in Portsmouth.

Travel time, substrate knowledge and accountability - three things you only get from a tradesperson who actually works the postcode every week.

Why we cover Portsmouth

Portsmouth is an island city with island problems - salt-laden wind, dense Victorian terraces, listed buildings and rapid new-build redevelopment along the waterfront. SJM Plastering has worked PO1 to PO6 for three decades. We know which streets in Southsea sit below the water table, which Buckland terraces still have lath-and-plaster behind the wallpaper, and which Tipner new-builds are due their first board-joint skim.

Coverage

We cover the whole city - Southsea, Old Portsmouth, Fratton, Buckland, North End, Copnor, Hilsea, Cosham, Drayton, Farlington, Paulsgrove and the Tipner and Horsea Island redevelopments. Crossing the harbour bridge daily.

Response times

Portsmouth is roughly 25 minutes from our base on Fontley Road, Titchfield. We aim to issue written quotes within 24 hours.

Property types we know

Three distinct Portsmouth property types each need different work: Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Southsea and Fratton (lath, lime, salt at low level); 1930s and post-war semis in Cosham, Drayton and Copnor (cement render, often patched); and modern flats and townhouses in Gunwharf, Tipner and along the harbour (paper-thin board joints, snagging plaster).

Common Portsmouth jobs

Most-requested jobs in Portsmouth: damp-proof re-plaster on lower courses of seafront and harbour-side terraces; ceiling re-skims after Victorian lath failure; full external silicone render refreshes on PO4 and PO5 semis with cracked sand-and-cement; new-build snagging plaster across Tipner and Gunwharf.

Common Portsmouth problems

The four issues we fix most often in Portsmouth.

Property type, climate and building age all play a part. These are the patterns we see week after week here.

Rising salts on harbour-side terraces

Properties in Old Portsmouth, Southsea seafront and Eastney see chloride and nitrate salts wick up through brickwork. Ordinary plaster blows within a year. We use renovating-plaster systems with a salt barrier coat.

Lath-and-plaster ceilings letting go

Victorian Fratton and Buckland terraces still have lime-on-lath ceilings. They sag, crack and eventually fall after upstairs leaks. We strip back, overboard, and skim - quiet, tidy, dust-sheeted.

Cracked monocouche on 30s semis

Cosham, Drayton and Copnor have hundreds of inter-war houses with original sand-and-cement render that's now map-cracked. We cut back, re-mesh and apply breathable silicone topcoat that flexes with seasonal movement.

New-build joint shadowing

Tipner, Gunwharf and Horsea Island flats show board joints, screw pops and corner cracks within 18 months. A full 2mm re-skim resets the surface so painters get a flawless finish.

Still unsure? Ask Steve directly →

Do you cover all Portsmouth postcodes?+

Yes - PO1 through PO6, plus across the harbour bridge to Cosham, Paulsgrove and Farlington. No postcode-based surcharges.

What does plastering cost in Portsmouth?+

Single-room re-skims typically £350–£650 depending on ceiling height, prep and access. Damp-proof re-plaster is priced separately - the diagnostic visit and quote are always free.

Are you experienced with Southsea seafront salt damp?+

Very - it's one of our most common Portsmouth jobs. We diagnose at source, treat the wall, then re-plaster with a Permaguard-accredited salt-barrier system carrying a manufacturer warranty.

Can you work on listed buildings in Old Portsmouth?+

Yes - we use traditional lime plaster and lime render on listed and conservation properties where modern cementitious finishes would cause harm. Discuss spec before quoting.

Do you snag new-build plaster in Gunwharf or Tipner?+

Regularly. Board joints, screw pops and corner cracks on flats and townhouses across the harbour developments - we'll re-skim a flat or just one room.

Are you Checkatrade and insured in Portsmouth?+

Yes - Checkatrade approved, fully insured, City & Guilds qualified, Permaguard accredited. Documentation available before work starts.
